Mobiya is the UK’s fastest growing mobile advertising company for SMS marketing. Mobiya provides leading advertisers, agencies and publishers with the opportunity to connect with consumers directly on their mobile phones, beyond traditional and digital media.
Mobiya’s mobile classified adverts appeared on many websites including the Daily Sport, Reed Publishing Sites, Magic FM, but were categorised in such a way that it was not easy to find the particular adverts you wanted.
PROJECT: Mobiya
It was decided that a Tag Cloud would be the best option to help users find the advert you wanted. Tag Clouds had been around a long time but not this complex and having the ability to handle 10,000+ adverts, at a fast speed.
The Tag Cloud was developed using Javascript/AJAX giving the ability to retrieve data from the server without interfering with the display. This basally means the web page does not refresh so speeds up the displays of the web page of the adverts.
PROJECT: Mobiya
A hard part of this was getting the back and forward buttons to work on a browser. Different methods had to be used for each browser, but after hours of development and testing we finally managed to get it working.
The project spanned over 6 months and involved many updates and improvements to the code.
The underlying database was mysql and improving the SQL over this period reduced the time to display adverts from 5 seconds to less then 1/10th of a second (on average with no caching).
We are continuing to support and update this application and hope to bring more improvements and features to production.
